Best Practice in Professional Development

Rewarding your commitment, developing your people.

The IOP Best Practice in Professional Development Awards 2010
The awards aim to commend, celebrate and promote the very best in training and professional development opportunities for physicists working in the UK. We’d strongly urge any employer with a serious interest in physics and a good professional development structure to apply.

Winning a Best Practice Award could be the ideal way to demonstrate your values when it comes to managing your people and showing your commitment to the vital role physics has to play in our society.

Who qualifies?
To be in the running for the Best Practice Award, your organisation will need to demonstrate that it has a formal career path in place for physicists, such as a structured training scheme. You will also need to show how you encourage the professional development of staff, recognise the specific skills of your people and promote a sensible work-life balance. Finally, you’ll need to demonstrate concrete steps to promote the value of physics in our society.

The IOP Best Practice Awards are now in their fifth year. 2009’s winners were AMEC, the National Physical Laboratory and Sellafield Ltd. AMEC won for its commitment to external collaboration and internal graduate training. NPL was particularly commended for its exemplary good practice at all levels. Sellafield got special recognition for its commitment to peer support within the company and the accreditation of staff training through chartership with the IOP.

How to apply
The Institute welcomes applications from all UK organisations that employ physicists. There are separate categories for small to medium-sized companies (defined as those with fewer than 250 staff) and larger organisations. The award is valid for three years and neither category is limited to one winner.

The closing date for applications is 4 May 2010, and winners will be announced at the Institute’s special Awards Dinner in September You can find everything you need to apply at 2010 Award guidelines.
