Prof John Harries, Professor of Earth Observation at Imperial College London, has today been named the first Chief Scientific Adviser for Wales.

Prof John Harries

Professor Harries, who won the Institute of Physics (IOP) Charles Chree Medal and Prize in 1999 and is an IOP fellow, is expected to take up his new post in May in order to help realize First Minister Carwyn Jones’ vision of Wales as a world-respected and knowledge-led economy.

The post was created following a review in 2008 and will encompass promoting science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects, becoming a focal point of the scientific community and providing advice to the Assembly Government.

Angharad Thomas, IOP National Officer in Wales, said, "We welcome the appointment of John Harries to the position of Chief Scientific Adviser for Wales. We wish Professor Harries all the best in this new and exciting role when he commences in May and we hope that this announcement at the beginning of 2010 will start a great year not only for the science community in Wales but for Wales as a whole."
